Account 13 . Anita was bewitched by her husband's mistress. Anita is a butcher. She bought and killed animals and barbecued them. Then she sold them in San Angel. About five years ago, she rented a house in her compound to Juana who came here from San Luis Potosí. One day Anita started out to San Angel but discovered she had forgotten her knife, so she went home to get it. When she pushed open the door, she saw her husband in bed with Juana. Anita got her knife and left without saying a word. When she came home that night she didtn't say anything to her husband, but she always got mad when she saw Juana. She told Juana to get out and find another house. When Juana left, Anita got sick with a big lump in her stomach that rose up toward her throat and almost choked her. She went to a doctor and he gave her an injection. Then Anita had her first child and it died. When her second baby died, the neighbors said Juana had hired a witch to harm Anita. They told Anita that her husband was still seeing Juana. Anita had five children and they all died. She finally moved back to Milpa Alta. Juana went back to San Luis Potosí.
Account 14 . A witch named Guadalupe lived with Pachita and her husband. The witch had an affair with Pachita's husband. His mother got so mad that she kicked the witch when she found her with her son. The next day, Pachita s mother-in-law had such a pain in her leg that she couldn't walk. Guadalupe had bewitched her with a doll found under the tlequil, where the tortillas are made. Pachita dug it up, took out the pins, tore up the doll, and threw it in the garbage. She got mad at her husband and went to work in Mexico City. Her husband wanted Pachita back, so he got Guadalupe to help him bewitch his wife. She told him to bury Pachita's picture and some of her clothes at the foot of a tree and recite a spell for wife-binding. After that Pachita never left her husband again, even though he beat her and gave her a very bad life. Every night she cried and decided to go home to her mother, but she could not leave because she was bewitched.
Account 15 . Josefina bewitched her husband, Carlos, after he left her. She went out with many other men and she was drunk a lot. These things annoyed Carlos. Sometimes, he got so mad at her he cried. Josefina was very angry when Carlos left her, so she hired a witch to force him to return. The witch gave him terrible headaches. When Carlos' employer told him he had been bewitched by his wife, he didn't want to believe it. But when his headaches got worse, he went to Josefina and said, "Cukita, I will return to you, but ease my pain." Then she cured his headaches. Later, he left her again, because people called him a fool and said he couldn't leave her since he was bewitched. His headaches returned after he left her. Whenever he went back to her, he felt well, but when he went away, he got sick again. The witch used Carlos' picture, handkerchiefs, and socks to harm him.
Account 16 . Casiano was a married man with five children when he started going out with a young girl named Elvida. When she got sick with stomach aches and shooting pains in the head, everybody said she had been bewitched by Casiano's wife. After Elvida died, Casiano got sick with paludismo, which is like rheumatism. His bones were paralyzed so his wife had to dress him and do everything for him. When she took off his clothes to bathe him, the clothes were all full of lice and that is why his family said he was bewitched. They thought his wife had bewitched him for having an affair with another woman.
Account 17 . Agapite was bewitched by friends who envied him because he had better food and clothes than they did. They paid a witch here in Tepepan to make him sick. She harmed him by sticking pins in a doll and putting the doll in the fire. He went to many doctors and curanderos. He even went to a veterinarian. But nothing helped. He was swollen and yellow and could not walk. For 30 years he was sick until a Spiritist cured him by cleansing him with herbs and siete machos perfume.
