EARL PARKER HANSON was born in Berlin, Germany, of American parents in 1899. He was graduated from the University of Wisconsin and has done graduate work in geography at the University of Chicago and Columbia University. At various times during his life he has been an engineer, explorer, lecturer, and writer. He is the author of many distinguished books in the general field of geography and has contributed frequently to geographical and scholarly magazines. He is presently chairman of the Department of Geography and Geology at the University of Delaware. The author's interest in Puerto Rico began in 1935 when he served there as planning consultant in the early stages of the work which is now being carried on by the Puerto Rico Planning Board.
