In reading and editing the contents of this volume, two possible sub-titles have come to the editor's mind again and again, namely (1) "The Scientific Battle of the Twentieth Century," and (2) "The Future of Physics." Viewed from either point of view, this book has been exciting reading, even to its editor. He may be permitted to express the hope, therefore, that the experience of other readers will be similar.

Grateful Acknowledgment is hereby made to the authors, editors, and publishers of all of Professor Einstein's works as well as of any other books, quotations from which appear in this volume. We are particularly grateful to them for the fact that they have not required us to enumerate these volumes here by author, title, and publisher.
We also wish to express our appreciation to the editors and publishers of the numerous scientific, mathematical, and philosophical journals quoted in these pages, for the privilege of utilizing such source materials therein found relevant to the discussion of Professor Einstein's scientific and philosophical views.
