EVERETT CARLL LADD, JR., is professor of Political Science and director of the Social Science Data Center at the University of Connecticut. He is the author or coauthor of numerous books and journal articles on American politics and the political process listed in the front of this book. Professor Ladd has been a visiting professor at Yale University and has held fellowships from the Social Science Research Council, the Ford Foundation, and the Guggenheim Foundation. In addition, he is a research fellow of the Center for International Affairs, Harvard University. He is currently a member of the Executive Council of the Inter‐ University Consortium for Political Research (ICPR).
SEYMOUR MARTIN LIPSET is the George D. Markham Professor of Government and Sociology and a member of the Executive Committee of the Center for International Affairs, Harvard University. He has held fellowships from the Social Science Research Council, the Ford Foundation, the Guggenheim Foundation, and the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences. He has been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Academy of Education, and the National Academy of Sciences. He is currently vice-president of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and chairman of the Section on the Social and Economic Sciences of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He has been on the councils of the American Political Science and the American Sociological Associations. Two of his works have received awards: Political Man (the Maclver Award) and The Politics of Unreason (the Myrdal Prize). The First New Nation was a National Book Award finalist. His books have appeared in eighteen languages.
