The project manager responsible for the department or construction of a large, complex system has all the responsibilities and functions of any other manager. However, the job has aspects and problems which go beyond those of the usual line or functional manager. The major difference between line and project management can be found in the project manager's necessary preoccupation with the integration of her or his project. However, a review of the literature provides remarkably little useful information indicating exactly how this important process of systems integration is conducted. This chapter will investigate the integration process and indicate to prospective project managers how they can initiate the process.
