The following sections set out the primary source materials I relied upon in writing the book's six chapters, along with selected annotations. Quotations in Prime Time are drawn both from my fieldwork (spanning the period 1986 through 1999) and from these sources. I have organized the sources both by chapters and by substantive content within each chapter.
The five first-person narratives included between the chapters of the book were distilled from many interviews with the individuals featured. They have been condensed into a narrative form and edited for clarity.
The opening account draws principally on my visits to Work Connection in the late 1980s as well as more recent interviews with Tom Flood. (The story that begins the first chapter is actually a consolidation of experiences during my first and second visits to The Work Connection.) Most of this material can be found in Marc Freedman, Partners in Growth: Elder Mentors and At-Risk Youth ( Philadelphia: Public/Private Ventures, 1988).
In addition, several quotes are also drawn from a newsletter article about the program, published by the State of Massachusetts: "IUE/The Work Connection, Inc.: Union-Sponsored Program Gives Jail-Bound Offenders One Last Chance." Unfortunately, no additional specifics or the name of the author is available.
