Evolutionary psychology provides a powerful framework for generating testable hypotheses about the nature of human interaction with automation, and for checking on the methodological assumptions built into studies. There is strong evidence for the existence of a pan-cultural "human nature" underlying both cross-cultural and individual differences. This can be viewed as a cognitive/emotional specification concerning the functioning of, and the evolved purposes for the modules of mind. Thus evolutionary psychology, like human factors, is a field science where ecological validity, the role of motivation, emotion, and actual human objectives and on-the-job performance take center stage. Both evolutionary psychology and human factors are inadequately informed by a laboratory based cognitive psychology with its emphasis on cold cognition and general purpose information processing. It has been said that there are no general purpose problems, only specific ones -- not being cheated, diagnosing an automation problem, finding a mate, etc. Human factors, at least, has a potential mate -- a natural partner in the study of the performance specifications of the 'liveware' component of human-machine systems -- evolutionary psychology.
