On John 3.22-29THE ORDER OF THE READINGS from the Gospel According to John, as you who show concern for your progress can recall,1 so continues that this [passage] which has just been read is set before us for our discussion today. The discussions [of this gospel], which have been presented earlier, from its very beginning right up to today's reading, have, you recall, already been rendered. And if perhaps you have forgotten many things from them, surely at least the fulfillment of our obligation remains in your memory.
(2) Those things which you heard from here about the baptism of John, even if you do not retain all of them, still I believe that you heard what you may retain. The things which were said also about why the Holy Spirit appeared in the form of a dove, and how that very knotty problem was resolved, namely that there was something which John did not know that he came to know in the Lord by means of the dove, although he already knew him when he said to him, as he was coming to be baptized, "I ought to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?" [And he already knew him] when the Lord answered him, "Let it be so now, that all justice may be fulfilled."2
