9. The Leaderless Group Discussion as a Leadership Evaluation Instrument*

AT THE BEGINNING of Cameron Hawley novel "Executive Suite," Avery Bullard, President of the Tredway Corporation could not decide whom to choose as his successor from among his five vice-presidents.

An idea flashed. He would get them to gether tonight for one last look . . . He'd put some kind of proposition before them . . . anything . . . the possibility of building a new factory in North Carolina. It would hit them cold . . . He would toss out the idea and then sit back . . . watching, listening, judging. Then he would pick the man who showed up best. (p. 5)

As is suggested by this passage from the recent best-seller about executive life, the leaderless group discussion has a common sense basis as a leadership evaluation instrument. For the technique has high face validity.
