Chapter 17
A Model for the Systematic Design of Instruction

The Dick and Carey model of instructional design was first published in text form in 1978. However, there were many influential developments in the preceding 20 years. This brief chapter includes a description of the context in which the model was originally developed and some of the major ideas that influenced its formulation. Also included are an explanation of the design model, and a consideration of reactions to it. The chapter concludes with suggestions for possible changes to the model in the future.


CONTEXT FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE DESIGN MODEL

The senior author of the model was an undergraduate and graduate student in the late 1950s and early 1960s in the fields of experimental and educational psychology with special interests in measurement and evaluation. After a few years in industry, he went to Florida State University to conduct research in the emerging field of computer-assisted instruction. One of the courses that he was asked to teach in the graduate program was titled, "Techniques of Programmed Instruction." It was within the context of this course, and with the aid of his graduate assistant and doctoral student, Lou Carey, that the model took final shape and the textbook was written to describe the model.

It is important to note that by the mid- 1970s, programmed instruction had been replaced by less structured forms of self-instructional materials
