Ecological Interactions and Biological Control

By David A. Andow; David W. Ragsdale et al. | Go to book overview
On potato, green peach aphid is rarely abundant except when populations are enhanced by inappropriate selection of pesticides, either insecticides targeted against other insect pests or fungicides applied for control of foliar pathogens. Therefore, even when green peach aphid is not the target pest, the possible effects on this species should always be considered in choosing potato pesticides. This consideration is especially important in seed potato production (because of the role of green peach aphid as a vector of potato viruses) and in growing cultivars susceptible to "net necrosis" (a tuber condition caused by infection with potato leafroll virus).
