gender, education-level, cultural background, etc., even if the users are united in their immediate tasks, it seems important to account for diversity in the components of the UI. Developers will have to plan for the impact of user testing on the development process, especially on the cost of user-testing's impact on the business model. Without planning, the cost of these efforts may defeat the business case for product development. Over the last twenty years, the author has noted hesitation on the part of some clients to undertake appropriate focus group investigation and usability testing during development. The challenge in the design community is to gather valid, precise, accurate, clear statistics of success cases and to make these available to the industry.
Connected to the Internet, devices and appliances with baby faces challenge designers to invent or re-apply metaphors, mental models, navigation, interaction, and appearance in novel ways that break through to new levels of simplicity, clarity, and consistency. By considering the dimensions of research, analysis, and design outlined above, designers can continue to accommodate marketing and engineering requirements while providing the next generation of consumers with devices and appliances that make life more humane.
