My Dear John 1Mount Vernon. April the 20th 1789
I am truly sorry to tell that the General is gone to New York, - Mr Charles Thompson came express to him, on the 14th - when, or wheather he will ever come home again god only knows, - I think it was much too late for him to go in to publick life again, but it was not to be avoided, our family will be deranged as I must soon follow him 2
I am greved at parting, and sorry to part with your sister as well as with the rest of the family, - I expect to set out the middle of may and have it not my power to send Patty home; 3 I shall be very glad to see you hear before I goe and wish you could make it convenient to come up for Patty - as it is out of my power to send her down - the same Horses that carred the General is to return for me to carry me to New York -
My love and good wishes to your mother grandmother Brothers and sisters and believe me Dear
John your most
