This position is nowhere more striking than among Marxists who have developed an extreme sado-masochistic relation to technology -- sadistic because in its Stalinist version it allows large-scale killing in the name of an alternative society, masochistic in the European left-wing way because it allows people to be deliciously inefficient, maimed and tortured in the name of an alternative society -- but still be right.
