Valery J. Cholakov was trained in biological anthropology at the University of Sofia. Later he worked as a historian of science at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. At Northwestern University he did a study on the environmental history of Russia. At present, he is a researcher in the Department of History at the University of Illinois, Urbana. Among his publications are The Nobel Prizes: Men and Discoveries ( Moscow, 1986) and "The Tides of Environmental Discourse", Science Studies 7, no. 1 ( 1994).
J. Donald Hughes is John Evans Professor of History at the University of Denver. He received his Ph.D. from Boston University. He is a founding member of the American Society for Environmental History and former editor-inchief of Environmental Review (now Environmental History).
