Preface

Maybe you want to become a teacher of young children, so you are taking coursework to learn about early instruction in reading, writing, and arithmetic. Or maybe you are already a teacher in a nursery school, child-care center, preschool program, kindergarten, or primary classroom.

There is no "maybe," however, about one thing. There is one thing you know for sure: You know that an adult who values reading, writing, and arithmetic can give a young child an early start on the 3 Rs. The instructional strategies begin with the oral approach (from phonemic awareness to arithme-talk) and then move on to print that is personally meaningful to a young child.
