It is never too soon to start reading aloud to a child. In child-care centers and preschools, read-aloud time is part of the daily schedule. But even during midnight feedings of infants, the seeds of literacy can be sown.

"I'll get our nursery rhyme book," one mother told her baby, "as soon as I finish writing this note to your grandma. Then we'll cuddle in the rocking chair, and I'll read to you." This baby was born into a reading and writing environment. Even arithmetic received early attention in this baby's home because the mother frequently opened the nursery rhyme book to a toe-play counting chant, and read:

The first little piggie went to market,
The second little piggie stayed home,
The third little piggie had roast beef,
The fourth little piggie had none,
The fifth little piggie cried "Wee, wee, wee,"
All the way home.

At the end of the chant she said, "One, two, three, four, five," touching each of the baby's toes in turn as she counted. Obviously, in the nursery, she was not trying to teach her infant to count, any more than she was trying to teach the baby to read and write as she talked about her own reading and writing. But this
