Some children take the early first steps into the 3 Rs in nursery school or right at the beginning of kindergarten. They soon need variations on the teaching tools described up to this point (wordcards, phonics games, personalized storybooks, and counting books). Variations in your teaching strategies will help your fast-moving early learners to progress further in reading, writing, and arithmetic.

When you were teaching the first few words, you regularly used wordcards as your main instructional materials. When you were teaching the first few letter-sound relationships in phonics, you repeatedly used the method of emphasizing initial sounds. For sentence practice, you used personalized storybooks again and again. For the first steps into early arithmetic, you used counting books repeatedly, with higher and higher numbers featured in the books. You individualized and personalized most of your instruction, trying to give each early learner one-to-one attention for a minute or two a day.

For those children who have comfortably taken the first steps into reading, writing, or arithmetic, it's time to expand your methods and vary your materials. It is also time to offer some of your 3 Rs instruction to groups or even to the whole class, rather than just to individuals, although you will have to maintain one-on-one times with those children who still need personalization.

Let's consider what to do and why to do it in terms of a variety of new instructional strategies.
