ALPHABET BOOKS FOR LETTER NAMES AND SOUNDS

Your pupils who took the first steps into phonics can probably tell you the sounds of a number of consonant letters. Your Betty's and your Bert's recognize their initial B and can tell you, "The letter B stands for the sound /b/." They have probably mastered eight or ten other initial letter-sound correspondences from words they came to know by sight on wordcards.

However, they may not know a sound for every letter of the alphabet. They may not yet have extended their phonemic awareness to final sounds in words. They may not have mastered blending. So you can select from among a number of approaches for your next steps in the early teaching of phonics.
