NEED FOR RECOGNITION
OF HIGH-FREQUENCY WORDS

Two of the most frequently used words in our language are also letters of the alphabet. They are the words I and a. The word and is our most frequently used conjunction. But the word at the top in all frequency counts is the word the.

In print, it is hard to find a paragraph, or even a sentence, that does not contain the word the. So your early readers need to develop instant recognition of this word. But the strategies you used for teaching the "when" and "where" words (chap. 27) will not work for an abstract word like the. You can not "strengthen the concept before presenting the word in print" because there is no concept connected with the.
