whether he happened to be in Austria or, as was oftener the case, abroad. He was the moving spirit of the "Jung Wien," or "Young Vienna," movement, whose earliest and most famous adherents were Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Schnitzler, Richard Beer-Hoffmann, and Peter Altenberg. His enthusiasm for youth and the aspirations of the young has never left him. During the winter of 1923 I saw him in Munich, and the greater part of our conversation consisted of his questions and my answers on the subject of the young writers of America. Bahr is an exceptionally versatile writer. For years he was the professional appreciator of all that was sincere in the art of his day: he has written criticism for nearly forty years. As a playwright, however, he did more than any other to create the "Wiener Stück" type -- the "Viennese Play." Only Schnitzler has surpassed him in the art of portraying the people of Vienna and in the craft of writing plays.
