LOVERS

Comedy in 5 acts ( 1895). Texts: in Lovers, The Free Woman, They! translated by Barrett H. Clark( N. Y. 1915), and same in Moses' Representative Continental Dramas ( Boston, 1924).

In his Dedication to Molière (affixed to the play "Molière's Household") Donnay writes: "Reassure yourself, Monsieur, we of to-day are far from the old French tellers of tales with their jokes on the subject of infidelity, which you yourself have often retold with so much brightness. . . . The conjugal accident no longer diverts us; it appears to us as a social necessity, yes, a shameful but logical consequence of marriage as it is most frequently practised in the society of our day." "Lovers" is based upon the thesis here enunciated by the author. But it is not a thesis-play: the philosophic undercurrent is no more than what most French writers are apparently unable to avoid in their lightest productions, for (as Donnay once said) "A play is a love-story."

1. Donnay considers a play a love-story. To this brief statement he adds that "since that story is laid in various places we are led to believe that plays differ one from another." An epigram, not a truth of universal application, but interesting as a statement of Donnay's own conception of the drama form. To him the love-story is of supreme importance.

In collecting material for an early book of mine on the French dramatists I had occasion to meet many of the veteran playwrights of the pre-war period:
