SIX CHARACTERS IN SEARCH OF AN AUTHOR

" Six Characters" is primarily interesting because of its technical form. The playwright simply picks to pieces before the audience all the elements of a play, and then proceeds to put them together again. No doubt he performed this trick for the purpose of emphasizing certain dramatic points, but largely by reason of the devices by which he succeeds, are we interested in the drama. This is one of the penalties any artist must pay when he departs -- if ever so little -- from trodden paths.

1. Pirandello did not actually invent a new method of writing plays. What he has done is simply to expend the device employed by novelists -- Fielding, for instance, in Tom Jones, and Thackeray in Vanity Fair -- by means of which the artist takes the public into his confidence. "This is only a story," he seems to say. "Why should I try to delude you into thinking it is life? Here are the puppets, and this is the way I work my wires." And yet, so sure is the artist of the vitality of his puppets that he can safely call our attention to the artifices whereby they are set in motion. By stripping from the artistic medium all that is likely to lend a color of actuality, the artist is performing a trick on the one hand, and on the other (if he succeeds), creating life after his own fashion.
