Spanish fortresses on the island. "Garita del Diablo" at San Felipe del Morro is the most famous of the sentry boxes. In black lettering at the top appears "Puerto Rico" and at the bottom, the slogan "Isla del Encanto," or "Island of Enchantment."57
The 1928 license plate of the U.S. Virgin Islands was probably the first plate issued, even though vehicle registrations may have occurred earlier. For ten years beginning in 1952, the slogan "Tropical Playground" appeared on the plates. From 1963 to 1967, the slogan "Vacation Adventure" appeared. In 1968, the multiyear plates carried the new slogan "American Paradise," which remains on the current issue.58 The current multiyear plates, which were issued first in 1988, employ red lettering and numerals on a white background. "American Paradise" is centered across the top and "US Virgin Islands 88" across the bottom.
