The Domestic Politics of German Unification

By Christopher Anderson; Karl Kaltenthaler et al. | Go to book overview
57.
The Preamble, written by the East German author Christa Wolf, looked toward the creation of a new state inspired by "revolutionary renewal" and rooted in the "humanistic tradition" created by "the best women and men of all sections of the [East German] population." The draft constitution copied numerous provisions of the Basic Law, including many of its individual rights provisions, but it added substantially to the list of socioeconomic rights. These included the right to education, social security, full employment, welfare assistance, a clean environment, and a woman's "right to pregnancy in self-determination" as well as absolute equality between men and women. The list also included the right to strike as well as bans on company lockouts, cartels, and monopoly restraints on trade.
