up against the sky--and Sidney nailed them beautifully in the court scene. 2 Man's destiny is to give the universe a reason for existing--to be the unique custodian of the heroic. One can embroider on these things, but there's nothing more to say. It's all summed up here in a few brief apothegms. I kept thinking as I listened, this is one of the very few noteworthy plays of our time. Perhaps the most brilliant and significant any of us will ever do. I felt like thanking Sidney, and since I couldn't I'm writing you.

Dear Mr. Huntington--
The other day you said you thought poetry should be impersonal, and at the moment I couldn't think of an answer. But the matter bothered me, and I make a counter-proposition. Dramatic and even epic poetry is necessarily impersonal, but lyric verse is a brief short- circuit of emotion, and the individual emotion is felt directly behind it. The more universal his subject the wider the appeal may be--but universality shouldn't be mistaken for impersonality. Not that it's important, but you had me on the ropes for a moment and I like to keep things straight in my mind.
Rehearsals of Key Largo began yesterday, and we are now in New York-- at the overleaf address. 2 I don't like it much though, and will spend a long week-end at New City.
