The strength of the case study approach lies in wealth of detail that can be accumulated and the understanding that may be arrived at. A close look at a situation may lead to conclusions quite different from those that result from a broader look or from more generalized data. The weakness of the case study approach is that the cases chosen for study may not be broadly representative of their class but, instead, unusual or special in critical aspects.

The bases for this chapter are census data and special planning studies made for the selected areas. Neither the data nor the analysis purport to be original. But the chapter does draw together in convenient form a great deal of information from scattered sources, some of which are not readily available except to a specialist in urban affairs.

To some, it means Broadway, the theater, glamorous actresses, and all the rest; to others, it means Wall Street, national and international finance, with many millions of dollars involved in many transactions; to others, it is the United Nations, with all its colorful international costumes, personnel, and activities all over the world, and so on. Anyone who first sees the great manmade canyons of the downtown and midtown office buildings cannot be indifferent to their emotional as well as to their intellectual impact.
