We all know Americans who say they are against Red-baiting except when it is employed against Reds. . . .they reluctantly agree to violation of the Bill of Rights in order to save it, to killing it as far as Communists are concerned in order that Communists may not kill it at some future time. . . .if one agrees that Reds may be properly attacked then one must also agree that their sympathizers may be properly attacked and with the first agreement the gates are open for attacks against all save reactionaries. The only place to make a stand, if we really believe in the Bill of Rights, is on the right of an American to be a Communist--or anything else he wishes to be provided he does not break the law.

I regard the American communists as foreign agents with whom no liberal organization can be associated without destroying itself and making futile its attempts to lead the American people to progressive political action. Communists only use nonCommunist liberals as long as they can use them in promoting their own power and influence while they are serving the changing lines of Russian
