After 1948, as America's leaders more fully prepared the citizenry for a longrange struggle against the people's revolution, Henry Wallace slowly adjusted himself to the antiCommunism of the men who had vanquished him. Leaving the Progressive party after the outbreak of the Korean War, he soon denounced the American Communists, condemned the Soviet Union, and by the end of the 1950s warned almost hysterically of the racial and political threat of Communist China. Even though he remained committed to a program of peace through progressive capitalism, Wallace's final years underscored the tragic consequences of the social-liberal attempt to combine private enterprise with humanitarian reform.
