INDEX OF NAMES
The purpose of this index is to save the Reader, Whose knowledgeof a monk is limited to the name, from the necessity of searching through all eight sectionsof the register. Since the entries are in alphabetical order within each section it has been deemedsufficient to dispense with page references and to provide key letter(s) for each: B (Bath); C(Canterbury); Co ( Coventry); E ( Ely); N ( Norwich); R ( Rochester); W ( Winchester); Wo ( Worcester). Thediverse forms of spelling of medieval names and places often Conceal the forms familiar to us;for his reason many of the variations are included here as separate entries Referring thereader to the appropriate section where the form under which the name is entered Will be found. Inmy view it is safer to Cope with the problem of medieval orthography than to attempt toallocate the modern equivalents to the toponyms by which the majority of monks were known. In thecase of two or more monks with the same name and of the same house or of different housesthere is only one entry; this should Cause no difficulty as their names in the text areprefixed by numbers in chronological order. In Cases of uncertainty the reader is advised to consultthe alternative spellings the follow many of the main entries below and then to check the indexunder the variants; e.g., under the toponym Salisbury both Sarisbury and Sarum occur, and bothhave their own separate entries in the index.
