Symphony, we find him turning his back to modernism and experimentation and, instead, resorting to simplicity, clarity and a classical style. Sabaneyev goes so far as to say that "he was one of the world's first pioneers in the return to design and classicism which came into fashion later. Prokofieff was writing in this, his characteristic manner, when Stravinsky was still a follower of Impressionism."" Prokofieff can now be said to be at the height of his powers," according to A. A. Fraser. "His writing is spontaneous, not forced, and his touch is sure. . . . His style becomes much less fantastic and much more intense, but does not imply that it was formerly superficial. It becomes now definitely objective and follows the general trend of European musical thought . . . but no one can accuse Prokofieff of ever having been a romantic or of ceasing to be characteristically individual. The discord used formerly rather as a sonority complete in itself (notably in Chout) now occurs logically at the meeting of different strands of melody and lines of thought, but polyphony is not a new feature of this composer. Finally, American and Western European life and art--the checker-board planning of towns, the lofty architecture, machinery, cubism, blank-verse, painting, either decorative or plastic--throw the straight line into high relief, cast firm shadows and make for the severe. But Prokofieff's writing was always dynamic." Altho Prokofieff makes Paris his permanent home today, he visits his native Russia periodically because he does not want to break ties with the land of his birth. One of his pet beliefs is that a composer creates only until his thirty- fifth year and then begins to repeat himself; he also believes in musical internationalism, feeling that any music that is confined to expressing one country alone cannot be important.Principal works by Serge Prokofieff:

Henri Rabaud 1873-

HENRI RABAUD was born in Paris on November 10, 1873. As a pupil of Massenet at the Paris Conservatory, he was awarded the much-coveted Prix de Rome in 1894. After the prescribed stay in Italy, he returned to Paris fully equipped in his musical technique to be able to devote himself seriously to composition. He attracted notice at an early age when a symphonic work based on a poem of Nicolaus Lenau, La Procession Nocturne, was performed at the Colonne Concerts on January 15, 1899. This work, as Edward Burlingame Hill points out, "tho simple in plan, succeeds thru its deftness of characterization, its charm of atmosphere and its musical coherence." Praise was heaped upon the young composer, particularly because of the pellucid form of the work and its clear musical writing--and the praise was sufficiently heartening to convince him that he was technically prepared to undertake larger forms. His first work for the stage, La Fille de Roland, disclosed imitative tendencies, but it was written with such a sure hand that there could be no doubt that Rabaud was potentially an important dramatic composer.

With an oratorio, Job, Rabaud succeeded, at last, in freeing himself of all constraining derivative influences, when he embraced modernism for the first time. His modernistic style reached its
