onto him. A policeman enters. CARLOS snatches CLAUDIA's bag and runs. The policeman opens his arms and grabs CARLOS by the neck. CLAUDIA comes up to CARLOS and takes her bag away from him. The policeman pushes CARLOS toward the wall and searches the youngster. He speaks into his walkie-talkie.)

SERGEANT MEDINA: This is Sergeant Medina. Send back-up to the 181st Street IRT station. Only one of the elevators is working. Hurry up.

CLAUDIA: Don't do that, Sergeant Medina. It was a lover's quarrel. (CLAUDIA approaches CARLOS and pats him on the back.) I told you that, by force, I was not going to kiss you. I'm free and you can't force me to give into your whims. Anyway, let's make this clear, you and I are through. Goodbye. (CLAUDIA starts to walk away.)

SERGEANT MEDINA: Where do you think you're going? The two of you come with me to the precinct. I have to make a statement about what happened.

CARLOS: Don't be so strict, Sergeant Medina. We love each other very much and, because we're so madly in love, we're always fighting.

SERGEANT MEDINA: (To CARLOS.) What is your name?

CARLOS: Legally, I don't have to answer any of your questions. As soon as we arrive at the precinct, I want a lawyer.

SERGEANT MEDINA: Young lady, what's your boyfriend's name?

CLAUDIA: You're very curious, Sir.

CARLOS: Don't tell him my name.

CLAUDIA: Don't you either. Don't allow this sergeant to use you in his search for rewards. How dare he want to know our names!

SERGEANT MEDINA: Shut up. At the precinct, you'll tell me everything (Blackout.)


Scene II

Two hours later. At the police station. CLAUDIA's parents talk to SERGEANT MEDINA. Both of them speak with a Spanish accent. CARLOS sits with his back to the audience. CLAUDIA stands a few feet away.

MAURICIO: In our family, we never had any problems with the law.
