We all have read stories on abused children gruesomely detailing the horrors perpetrated by their parents. Provoked by anger and revulsion from such accounts, some people suggest countering violence with more violence. "A man like that ought to be shot"; or "She ought to be strung up," are often the public's response to child abusers.
If the subject is violence against wives, "Why doesn't she leave him—just walk out?" is the most frequently heard response.
