scored. To obtain the fitness test mark, the five percentile scores are averaged. Notice also that space has been provided for recording a mark in the sports skills area as well as for citizenship. From the circle, which shows the emphasis placed on each category, observe the many factors that go into making up the mark for each of the three areas. Note too that the card is issued twice a year and may be used over a four-year period.

To be sure, this card does not represent a model marking scheme, nor will it necessarily fit every situation. It is merely a guide from which the physical educator may derive ideas for initiating a marking system, or perhaps for improving the one already in effect.

Figure 113 contains a fitness progress report currently in use at Darien, Connecticut. The parent, current physical education teacher and next year's physical education teacher each receive it copy, while one is maintained for the pupil's cumulative record.

These approaches to recording marks in physical education offer excellent opportunities to establish good relations with the parent. In addition, they are also a means of elevating your profession in the eyes of the school administrator as well as in the estimation of the parent and child. They are significantly removed from the "S" and "U" or "P" and "F" basis of marking too frequently practiced in our profession.

As was mentioned earlier, the youngster with a handicap cannot be marked in accordance with the general marking scheme. It is better to evaluate the handicap and decide upon realistic goals for the child tol reach. By so doing, standards for marking on an individual basis can be established.
