I should like to thank Professor Elizabeth Colson who advised in the compilation of this volume and has been involved in the work of the Refugee Studies Programme (RSP) since the early 1980s. Dr Michael Cernea was a driving force behind the First International Conference on Development-Induced Displacement held in January 1995 hosted by the RSP, and he continues to play an important role in the RSP's work on forced displacement and resettlement. It was Dr Barbara Harrell-Bond who realised the importance of understanding the processes behind development-created population displacement and the resettlement of relocated people for the field of refugee studies.
This volume was prepared and published with the financial support of The World Bank and the European Commision. Sarah Rhodes, Monika Porada and Philadelphia Ricketts kindly read the manuscript and assisted in the compilation of the bibliography and figures.
