The Second European Symposium on Suicidal Behaviour was held in Edinburgh in June 1988. Over 130 speakers participated, mostly drawn from research centres in Europe, but with some distinguished contributors from North America.
The Symposium agreed, notwithstanding the general scientific excellence of the presentations, that it would not be useful to seek publication of all the papers given, since some of the work reported was destined to appear in the professional press. Accordingly, several contributors refrained from submitting their papers for consideration, but all the same many more submissions were received than could be accommodated. The editors therefore had to make many difficult, even invidious, choices and to exclude several excellent papers; inevitably the final selection is necessarily somewhat arbitrary. Nevertheless the reader has the opportunity of enjoying a unique collection of papers, which provides an overview of some of the major contemporary innovations in parasuicide and suicide research.
We take this opportunity to thank the many colleagues who helped to make the Conference so successful and to acknowledge the assistance of Royal Bank of Scotland, Marks & Spencer plc, The Scotch Whisky Association, Duphar Laboratories Ltd., and the City of Edinburgh.
