In quoting from periodicals published in the fifties, as well as using my own copies and the collections in the Library of Congress and the library of my home institution (with invaluable assistance from Interlibrary Loans), I have drawn on files in the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, Lincoln Center, New York City (abbreviated as NY Public), and, more extensively, in the Margaret Herrick Library, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Los Angeles (abbreviated as Herrick). The Herrick collection divides its files according to person or production, and I have followed that distinction here. (I should also note that the Herrick library often identified the Los Angeles Citizen‐ News by the name of its regional editions, such as the Hollywood or Beverly Hills Citizen, and I have followed their citations.) The Herrick library has, as part of its holdings, the Production Code Administration files in the Motion Pictures Association of America Collection, and these are designated as a PCA file here and in my notes.
