impacts may only accumulate with time ( Jacobson et al., 1997b, 1997c). Cross sectional studies cannot detect effects of illness that evolve across developmental stages. Consequently, maintaining a longitudinal perspective in future research will provide the most information about the evolving effects of chronic illness on children and their families.
