Michael J. Schmoker is research analyst for the Amphitheater Schools in Tucson, Arizona, where Richard B. Wilson is superintendent. They have collaborated on articles published in Phi Delta Kappan, Executive Educator, and Kappa Delta Pi Record dealing primarily with Deming's philosophy and management principles. On the basis of their work, they were recently invited to make a presentation on Total Quality Management as it applies to schools at the Fortune magazine Education Summit in Washington, D.C. Their perspectives on TQM for schools are available on a set audiotapes distributed by the American Association of School Administrators.
Schmoker received his B.S. and M.A. from Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff. He has published articles on school reform and other topics in a number of major newspapers and education journals. His work on TQM led to an invitation to appear with W. Edwards Deming in a one-day seminar for educators. He teaches part time at the University of Phoenix, offering a course on Total Quality for educators.
Wilson received his doctorate from the University of Arizona. His professional career includes teaching and administrative posts at both the elementary and secondary levels. A former high school principal, he has been superintendent of Amphitheater Schools for 12 years. During his tenure there, the district has won a host of awards and other accolades. He has served on numerous state commissions and task forces. Most recently, he has been the driving force behind the Amphitheater Schools' Total Quality initiative.
Amphitheater Schools is a K-12 district in Tucson, with a long-time interest in innovation, including the selective adaptation of business management theories to education.
