War years in
At the beginning of the Second World War, there was a special war session of the federal Parliament in 1939. Starting with the dramatic incident in the House, where Mr. Woodsworth stood alone with his convictions, what were your impressions?
Prior to our being called to this special session of Parliament, Mr. Woodsworth suffered a mild stroke. It was not generally known that he came to this session almost blind, with one side slightly paralyzed.
Britain declared war on 3 September, and Parliament was called on 7 September because King had always taken the position, quite properly, that we were not at war merely because Great Britain was, and that the Canadian Parliament alone could declare our nation to be at war.
