The 1948 election
Before the 1948 election, Mr. Tucker was in the federal Parliament. Do you recall what his line was when he came back? What was he going to do to defeat the C.C.F.?
Mr. Tucker took the position that we were fastening a Socialist dictatorship upon the people of Saskatchewan. We were establishing what he called compulsion and regimentation by setting up crown corporations and imposing regulations. Automobile insurance was an example. A person had to pay their hospital tax and have hospital insurance whether they wanted it or not. We had imposed regulations in the north country for conservation of fish and game. All this was played up as part of a terrible totalitarian form of society we were imposing on the good people of Saskatchewan. He started his campaign with the slogan, "Tucker or Tyranny."
