Canada and Japan Bilateral Economic Relations
Japan is Canada's largest single overseas market and constitutes the world's second largest free-market economy. It enjoys a growing share of world trade and continues to be one of the fastest growing major economies in the world. Japan is also on the leading edge of technological developments, and its current account surpluses make it the world's largest exporter of capital. These qualities and the promise of growing access to the Japanese market (due to the gradual removal of structural and regulatory impediments to trade) provide a focus for Canadian policy development with respect to bilateral economic relations with Japan.
In this chapter, the pattern of the bilateral economic relationship are analyzed and the policy objectives and impacts of Canada's responses to threats and opportunities in three complementary areas--trade, investment, and technology development and transfer--are analyzed
