British Debts versus
WHEN AT THE age of twenty-seven, Washington, home from the wars and just married, settled down at Mount Vernon, he possessed almost no actual experience as a Tidewater planter. Far from interfering with the profitable Custis operations, he switched his own business in England from the factors he had found for himself * to the Custis factor, Robert Cary & Co.
To Cary, Washington wrote that he intended to use on his own plantations the Custis seeds and methods. 1 However, he regarded this as only as a temporary expedient.
He ordered agricultural books from England, including "a small piece in octavo called A System of Agriculture or a Speedy Way to Get Rich." From the more technical of the manuals he copied out with his pen, probably to engrave the contents on his memory, long extracts. But he also engaged in personal experimentation, for he realized that "what is good and profitable husbandry in one country may not be so in another."____________________
