There is no collection of Strong's personal papers. The facts of his personal and public life can be gleaned from his obituary notices, the most thorough of which appeared in the Philadelphia Public Ledger on August 20, 1895. This can be supplemented with materials and information in biographies of his contemporaries on the Supreme Court. For example, see Charles Fairman , Mr. Justice Miller and the Supreme Court, 1862-1890 ( Cambridge, Mass., 1939); C. Peter Magrath, Morrison R. Waite: The Triumph of Character ( New York, 1963); and Carl B. Swisher, Stephen J. Field: Craftsman of the Law ( Washington, D.C., 1930). Some aspects of Strong's career are treated in Stanley I. Kutler, Judicial Power and Reconstruction Politics ( Chicago, 1968).
