General Creighton Abrams, while Chief of Staff of the Army, is said at one point to have asked, "Doesn't anyone out there just want to do a good job?" Lots of people do, and the system should be supportive of them, rather than putting obstacles in their way. In that way, and in that way only, can we get on with the pursuit of what Drew Middleton has called "the services' great if unrealized ideals of duty, honor, country." 22
