A LIST OF all the published books, articles, and newspapers I have consulted would add many pages to a book that is already overly long. The reader who wishes to pursue certain topics can glean bibliographical citations from my notes. I feel that the interests of future scholars will be better served by an annotated list of manuscripts available in various depositories or on microfilm.
The papers of Washington, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, and George Mason are all indispensable, and all available on microfilm or in printed editions. Also on microfilm are the Wilson Cary Nicholas Papers and the Samuel Smith Papers. Both are exclusively business and family correspondence with no political information prior to 1800.
