About this Book

The book has four main sections:


The Reading Course

A structured course in 16 chapters takes the user from beginner's level towards independent reading (with the aid of a good dictionary) of complex authentic German texts. The first nine chapters develop close reading skills by systematically working through short texts and focusing on the recognition of key grammatical structures. Chapter 10 (on reading strategies) forms something of a bridge between this first stage and the later chapters, in which the focus changes to practising a wide variety of reading strategies when tackling longer texts.

Each chapter of the reading course contains a set of exercises, and a key is provided at the end of this section. A system of cross-references enables the user to study a particular grammatical feature more fully in the Reference Section.


The Reference Section

The numbered sections (R1-R191) give a detailed description of the grammatical structures of written German presented from a 'recognition' point of view (that is to say, as they are encountered by real readers reading real texts), as well as other relevant information, e.g. on cognate words, 'false friends' and other problem words, and on how to get the most out of your dictionary. Many of the illustrations in the Reference Section are taken from the authentic texts contained in the Text Corpus. This means that these grammatical examples can be located and studied in their full context. Sometimes the examples contained in the Reference Section show a variation on the pattern which actually occurs in the text corpus. In this case, the user will learn to study the full context and see whether/how a change of meaning is produced. It should be noted that the style of the cross-reference (e.g. [T12:3]) is the same for 'verbatim' and 'approximate' examples.


Further Exercises

This section contains a set of exercises (E1-E59) on important aspects of the grammar which may need reinforcing. These exercises can be done independently of the reading course, and are cross-referenced to the relevant parts of the Reference Section so that the user can focus on recognizing particular structural features. A key is provided at the end of this section.


The Text Corpus

This consists of 23 authentic German texts (T1-T23) taken from a wide range of sources and on a wide range of subjects. Each sentence in each text is numbered, and each text has a parallel English translation on the facing page.
