Implications for Social
A book of this type must ultimately provide the field with implications for social work education. Practice with the urban-based correctionally supervised will necessitate that social work education be responsive to the needs of future social workers working in such a setting. Frankly, it would be irresponsible to place the entire challenge of addressing the correctionally supervised from a capacity enhancement perspective, or for that matter a deficit perspective, on practitioners without social work education's playing a critical role in helping the profession to shift toward this field of practice. The success of any new form of human services practice rests on a collaborative effort between providers, consumers, and academics.
This chapter, as a result, provides a series of recommendations that systematically address the need for social work instruction in the classroom and in the field. These recommendations, however, are probably not going to be fully accepted without considerable debate, and in some cases, active resistance.
