THE MID-PHASES (2):
the Internal World
THE EMERGENCE FROM THE WORLD OF "BONDAGE TO UNCONscious infantile selves," of "karmic illusion," coincides with a new relationship to real persons. The real other person, instead of being a mere occasion for the evocation of innerfantasy oriented responses, becomes the real object of concern. Instead of being an "it," serving as an instrument of fantasy gratifications, the other person becomes a potential "Thou."
This process is the natural concomitant of release from the various "Me's," the binding ideas of self, and the liberation of the generative "I." The "Thou" and the "I" are integral to each other. The gesture toward the real Other can only be taken as there is an "I," a person free to be open to the reality which comes. In psychoanalytic language: Infantile inner conflict is complemented by infantile interpersonal relationships; we must emerge from both concurrently. It is only our discussion that must present the matter in two parts.
