Much has been said about the inexorable link between society and science. I assume this coupling is inevitable and useful. More, I shall take a full engagement with our possible futures as a positive good, far better than hedgehog reluctance, which often masquerades as mere moral nostalgia.
We scientists who choose to speak to the rest of our society bear a particular burden. We cannot discuss where science may lead without using imagination, yet science itself is supposed to be strictly true in the checkable, provisional sense. In a sense, by discussing possibilities that may not come to pass, we are telling lies about the truth.
